Completing the FAFSA

- Register for a personal identification number (PIN) so you can sign your Free Application for Federal
Student Aid (FAFSA) online. Both you and a parent should register for separate PINs. You can register
for a PIN online at www.pin.ed.gov.
- Complete and submit the FAFSA as soon after January 1 every year you need financial aid. The FAFSA is required when
applying for state and federal grants, work-study, and student loans. Both you and your parent need to complete the form
to determine financial requirements and eligibility. Simply apply online at www.fafsa.ed.gov
and sign the FAFSA with your PIN. It takes approximately 7 to 14 days to be processed.
- Wait for the Student Aid Report (SAR) after the FAFSA is processed. The SAR summarizes information provided on the
FAFSA. The college(s) you are interested in attending will also receive a copy of your SAR. If you don't receive your
SAR in four weeks, contact the Department of Education at 1-800-4FED-AID.
- The financial aid office at your selected college(s) will then send you an Award Letter. The Award Letter
explains the financial aid assistance you can expect while attending that college. In addition, if you don’t need
all of the aid provided, you are not required to accept it.
Call College Information Service at 1-800-554-2717 if you have any questions.
