Applying for Financial Aid

You, the student, should:
- Register for a personal identification number (PIN) so you can sign your Free Application for Federal
Student Aid (FAFSA) online. Both you and a parent should register for separate PINs. You can register
for a PIN online at www.pin.ed.gov.
- Complete and submit the FAFSA as soon after January 1 every year you need financial aid.
Apply online at www.fafsa.ed.gov and sign the FAFSA with your PIN.
- Once the FAFSA is processed, you will receive a Student Aid Report (SAR).
Check for accuracy and make changes if needed. If you don't receive your
SAR in four weeks, contact the Department of Education at 1-800-4FED-AID.
- Accept or decline the college financial aid offer you receive through a financial aid award letter.
- If you have accepted a student loan as part of your financial aid award, you must complete a Master
Promissory Note (MPN), according to college or lender instructions.
- Call College Information Service at 1-800-554-2717 if you have any questions.
The college should:
- Electronically receive the results of your FAFSA and determine grant or loan eligibility.
- Contact you for additional information if needed.
- Notify you about your financial aid eligibility based on information you provided.
- Send you a bill listing charges and the financial aid you accepted.
If you do not have any access to a computer, you can pick up the FAFSA at your high school,
postsecondary institution, or at College Information Service, 1200 Memorial Hwy, Bismarck, ND or
request one by e-mailing CIS at bndsl@nd.gov.
